Murals, Rubber Bullets and Progress
"Yeah, Rebekah, I guess we only dislike each other, not the visitors."
I thought that summed it up beautifully. That said, Robert told me he can see progress and I agree. Belfast has come a long way in a few short years- an even longer way since the Troubles. Some of the more confronting murals are gone- the infamous 'sniper' that so many of my students have been fascinated with has vanished. If you're one of the students who spent time walking back and forth across my classroom exclaiming "Miss, he's following me!" you can rest assured that image is down. The memory of these murals is still there- part of the history, but slowly some are being replaced.
That said, some, particularly the 'memorial' murals, remain. I asked Robert if I thought this would change and he told me it wouldn't- people wouldn't let it.
